After spending close to 24 hours in three different airports and planes, we finally arrived to our first destination in Peru: Cuzco, the "navel of the world" in Quechua Inca language!
The flight to get there was long and uncomfortable and we still feel quite jet-lagged, but the last hour flying over the Andes was simply amazing: as you will see on the pictures, beautiful white mountains, lost in the middle of a sea of clouds…
Arriving in Cuzco, at more than 3300 meters above sea level, the altitude makes you a little dizzy. But fortunately, we were welcomed in our charming little hotel "Los Ninos", with a coca leaf tea on a beautiful sunny inner court-yard.
The rest of the day was spent exploring the main landmarks of Cusco, from the Iglesia de Santo Domingo and the Inca Korikancha Temple, to the Plaza de Armas with the Catedral and a beautiful Jesuit church (our regards to Padre Alberto!)… and of course passing by some very colorful markets! We were especially lucky as the whole city is celebrating the 100 years of the discovery of Machu Picchu this week with a huge carnival party, which could very well compete with the one of Venice or Binche!
Culinary-wise, we have tried some nice salty bakery delights, but we are still doubting whether we will have the courage to go for the real local specialty: roasted guinea pigs!
